Myanmar to call back citizens working illegally in Malaysia

Myanmar will recall its citizens detained in Malaysia for working illegally there in the wake of " Ops Bersepadu up" nationwide operation since the beginning of this month, local media reported Thursday.

The repatriation will be made after scrutiny if they are Myanmar citizens, sources with the Foreign Ministry was quoted by the Myanmar Post Global as saying.

"Myanmar embassy will make coordination with authorities concerned to scrutinize Myanmar detainees and then Myanmar citizens will be sent back to Myanmar," the report said.

As part of Malaysia's nationwide cracking down on illegal workers, a total of 2,400 illegal immigrant workers have been arrested by Malaysian authorities in the operation carried out since Sept. 1. Of them, Myanmar nationals accounted for more than 500.

Meanwhile, a total of 7,827 Myanmar migrant workers have so far returned to Yangon from Malaysia for their safety after some of them were attacked or murdered in Kuala Lumpur in May and June.

There are more than 400,000 Myanmar migrant workers in Malaysia, according to the Myanmar Embassy. About 300,000 are legal workers, while about 40,000 are illegal and about 90,000 are in various process for refugee status.
