Tajikistan announces preliminary results of parliamentary elections

The chairman of Tajikistan's Central Commission for Elections and Referenda (CCER), Shermuhammad Shohiyon, announced the preliminary results of elections of the country's lower house of the parliament on Monday.

Shohiyon said the voter turnout was 85 percent among the 4.3 million registered voters nationwide.

According to the chairman, the preliminary results showed that People's Democratic Party won 65.2 percent of the vote, Agrarian Party of Tajikistan garnered 11.8 percent, Party of Economic Reforms gained 7.6 percent, and Socialist Party got 5.5 percent.

Under Article 48 of the Constitutional Law on Tajikistan's parliamentary elections, four other parties failed to obtain the minimum 5 percent of the vote required for holding seats in the parliament.

Therefore, the People's Democratic Party won 16 seats, the Agrarian Party of Tajikistan three, the Party of Economic Reforms two, and the Socialist Party one.

The authorities set up polling stations in 41 districts and 3,200 precincts, including 35 stations in 27 foreign countries.
