Tokyo stocks opened higher Thursday as the market mood was brightened by hopes the United States and Canada could strike a new trade deal, with a weak yen also adding to a risk-on mood.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average added 129.47 points, or 0.57 percent, from Wednesday to 22,977.69.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, gained 6.72 points, or 0.39 percent, at 1,746.32.

Mining, oil and coal product, and marine transportation-linked issues comprised those that gained the most in the opening minutes after the morning bell.
