Tokyo stocks closed higher Tuesday despite Washington's latest tariff offensive against Beijing as investors sought out issues oversold and were emboldened by the likelihood economic policies would continue as planned after the ruling Liberal Democratic Party's leadership race later in the week.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average added 325.87 points, or 1.41 percent, from Friday to close the day at 23,420.54.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange gained 31.27 points, or 1.81 percent, to finish at 1,759.88.

Air transportation, iron and steel, and insurance-linked issues comprised those that gained the most by the close of play.

Financial markets in Japan were closed on Monday due to a national holiday.
