Search engine platform Google will soon launch its shopping tab in India, allowing user to search for products to buy and directing them to merchant websites or e-commerce platforms for product listings.

The company is in talks with Indian e-commerce players like Flipkart, Paytm and others. It is expected the shopping tab will be piloted soon, prior to a fully-fledged launch by the end of the year, resources told the Economic Times.

"Besides large e-commerce websites, Google is also expected to tap into its large network of registered small and medium enterprises or SMEs from neighborhood Kirana stores (Hindi word for Grocery stores) to high-end handicraft stores to help users discover products they want," the sources said.

With 80 million to 85 million online shoppers, India is an important market for Google. Google currently runs a shopping tab in over 30 countries, and company sources said it has seen a high degree of conversion for strong user intent.

On the user side, the tab has also seen high rates of engagement, largely due to the specificity that product search allows, the Economic Times reported.

Earlier this year, Google invested in omnichannel e-commerce fashion company Fynd, which gives an online platform to brands to show their store stock, other than support hyper-local delivery services Dunzo.
