At least 13 people were killed and over 40 others injured in separate road accidents in Pakistan in the past 24 hours, local media and police said on Thursday.

According to Senior Superintendent of Police Pervaiz Khan Umrani, at least eight people were killed and 32 others sustained injuries when a passenger bus collided with a truck at the Indus Highway near Makhdoom Bilawal area of Dadu, a district in the country's southern Sindh province.

The passenger bus was travelling to Karachi, the provincial capital of Sindh province, from Larkana when the truck hit it from behind, said the police official, adding that women and children were among the injured people.

He said the tragic accident took place due to overspeeding, and the truck driver was taken into custody. An investigation into the incident had been launched, said police.

Following the fatal accident, rescue teams and police rushed to the crash site and shifted the bodies and injured to the local hospital. Several among the injured were said to be in critical condition, according to the hospital sources.

In another accident, a jeep carrying students fell into a ditch in Muzaffarabad, the capital city of Pakistan-controlled Kashmir, killing three students on the spot and injuring five others on early Thursday morning, Samaa News reported.

All the injured were shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital, where condition of three students was said to be critical. They have been transferred to the Combined Military Hospital Muzaffarabad for better treatment.

The accident happened due to the road condition being rough, causing jeep to slide into the ditch, said police officials in the area.

Separately, late last night, deadly traffic accident claimed the lives of two people, wounding seven others in Tando Adam Khan city of Sindh province. The bodies and injured were shifted to the nearest hospital in the city, according to local TV channel Abb Takk News.

According to official data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, around 9,000 road accidents are reported every year since 2011 in the country, killing more than 4,500 people on average annually.
