Russia has decided to join the world tobacco control organization in a bid to promote a healthy lifestyle among Russians, the Itar-Tass news agency reported Thursday.

The Cabinet approved on Thursday a draft law which, if accepted by the parliament, would allow Russia to ratify the World Health Organization (WHO) Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.

Under the convention, signatories should impose a ban on tobacco advertising for five years and place smoking-is-harmful slogans on cigarette packets for three years.

The signatory governments should also introduce new taxes, price regulating measures and tough rules against tobacco advertising, sponsorship and smuggling.

The Russian Ministry of Health and Social Development has finalized an anti-smoking strategy and put forward proposals on the establishment of a national coordinating center to tackle the problem, Itar-Tass said.

The convention, approved by the WHO in 2003, came into force in2005.
