Russians start world's first motorbike trip across Africa
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2008-01-12 14:00
The world's first motorbike trip across Africa started on Friday in St. Petersburg by two residents of the city, Russian news agencies reported.

Grigory Kubatyan and Alexei Pomor will first travel along the eastern coast of the continent, and will return back along the western coast. They will visit 32 countries within the year. The two are also planning to visit Madagascar. They expect to cover up to 300 kilometers a day.

The motorcyclists will begin their African tour in Egypt, driving along the Nile. They will have to travel in exhausting conditions with temperatures soaring to 50 degrees Celsius and no pure drinking water. However, they will not be able to take off their warm motorcycle suits protecting them against merciless insects.

On their way, the travelers will be shooting a film about life in Africa and will be sending photos to Petersburg.

They said that the journey was to have started on Dec. 15, but it had to be postponed because of unforeseen difficulties with getting necessary documents. Both are experienced travelers. Grigory Kubatyan spent 15 months traveling in Latin America, as well as made expeditions to China, India and Australia.

Kubatyan was quoted by the Itar-Tass news agency as saying that the participants in the project "want to test recourses of the human body, and learn how Africa has changed over the recent time."
