Dutch minister refused entry into Sudan over controversial film

Dutch Defense Minister Eimert van Middelkoop has been refused an entry visa by the Sudanese government just days before he was due to visit the country, Dutchpaper De Volkskrant reported Tuesday.

The Sudanese government has not given a reason, but a top Dutch civil servant involved in the planning for the visit said it could be a reaction to Dutch lawmaker Geert Wilders' recent film which criticizes Islam, the paper said.

Van Middelkoop planned to visit Dutch soldiers participating in the United Nations' mission to police the peace accord between the Sudanese government and rebel groups, and to have talks with Sudanese authorities. The Dutch government decided last Friday to extend their stay.

Plans for the minister to travel on to Ethiopia and Burundi have also been cancelled, the report said.
