Last Updated(Beijing Time):2009-09-09 11:31
A strong 6.2-magnitude earthquake rattled midwestern Georgia early Tuesday, apparently causing few casualties and minor damage, officials said.

The earthquake occurred at 2:45 a.m. local time (2245 GMT Monday). The epicentre was 10 kilometers away from the town of Oni and about 140 kilometers northwest of the capital Tbilisi, the country's seismological bureau said.

One person was reported injured in Oni and some older buildings were heavily damaged, officials said.

Many Oni residents spent the night on the street out of fear of strong aftershocks.

Tbilisi residents also felt the earthquake but there were no injuries and no buildings in the capital city were damaged, officials said.
