Home-made bomb blasts outside Greek politician's home in Athens
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2009-09-24 17:43
A weak explosion caused by a home-made bomb in an apartment building in the center of Athens Wednesday, outside the apartment of a former minister of the main opposition socialist party PASOK and his wife, a candidate MP in the Oct. 4 elections, put the police counter-terrorism unit on alert.

The bomb had been placed in a pan at the hallway of the fourth floor of the building in which Gerassimos Arsenis and Louka Katseli live in a posh district in the heart of the capital.

About half an hour before the explosion an unidentified person called a newspaper and a private radio station of Athens, warning of the bomb blast. A police counter-terrorism squad crew and bomb disposal experts arrived promptly at the area.

No injuries were made. Only material damage was caused. No group has claimed responsibility yet. According to local media, experts suggest that the extreme Left group "The Nuclei of Fire" might hide behind Wednesday's explosion. The methodology points to a recent bomb attack at the Macedonia-Thrace Ministry in Thessaloniki two weeks ago.

In late afternoon in another posh district of Athens, according to police sources, a hideout with materials that can be used in terrorist attacks was discovered.

Local media reports said that at least three people were arrested and that in the apartment among others a similar bomb in a pan was found which was to be used for attacks in other politicians' offices.

According to unconfirmed sources the persons involved were under surveillance for months for possible connections with the group "The Nuclei of Fire." At least one of them is supposed to be linked to attacks that are connected with the unrest that followed the death of a 16-year old student by a police officer in the center of Athens last December.
