Azerbaijan warns of anthrax outbreak in Georgia
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-06-14 14:12

The Ministry of Agriculture of Azerbaijan Wednesday urged the country's customs authorities and retail facilities to stay alert to the spread of anthrax in neighboring Georgia.

The warning applied primarily to meat and other food products imported from Georgia, said the State Veterinary Service under the Ministry of Agriculture.

The service said it had already sent a request to the Veterinary Service of Georgia for information about the situation of the current outbreak. However, no response is received yet.

All meat products imported from other countries should be vaccinated and go through a minimum period of 21 days of pre-export quarantine and test in labs, the State Veterinary Service said.

According to Georgian media, the disease is spreading in the regions of Georgia densely populated by Azerbaijanis, and 30 people including 20 Azerbaijanis have been infected so far.

Anthrax outbreaks in Georgia have been frequented in recent years. Bacillus anthracis, a pathogenic bacterium found throughout the world, is the causative agent of anthrax in mammals, including both wild animals and domestic livestock. Anthrax remains an endemic disease worldwide and still has potential to threat public health.
