Polls show Maastricht Treaty unfavorable to most French
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-09-18 11:15

A majority of French citizens do not agree with the current policy of the European Union (EU), with 64 percent saying they would now vote against the Maastricht Treaty, 20 years after its ratification, the French paper Le Figaro reported Monday.

The Masstricht Treaty, which set up the single European currency, was adopted via a referendum in September 1992. France's votes at that time showed a narrow gap with 51 percent for and 49 percent against.

However, Monday's Ifop polls for Le Figaro turn out to be "bad news for Brussels" as the survey showed "the referendum was so divided, it would be rejected in France if it was held today."

According to the polls, 67 percent of respondents nowadays believe that the EU is rather "in the wrong direction" since the ratification of Maastricht Treaty, whereas in 1999 a majority of 53 percent fed a favorable opinion on the EU policy .

Neverthless, 65 percent of the French prefer to not abandon the euro and return to the franc. "The single currency is a very bad recruiting agent for Europe, especially in the lower classes," pollster Ifop official Jerome Fourquet said.
