Ireland is heading for a sizzling heatwave this week with temperatures set to soar into 25 degrees over five days, forecasters predicted on Monday.

Met Eireann, the Irish weather services, said that warm, humid and dry conditions are expected until the end of the week.

A heatwave in Ireland is classified as five consecutive days of temperatures over 25 degrees.

"Very warm again tomorrow with many places dry and highest temperatures of 20 to 25 degrees," it said.

"The cloudier conditions with a little rain will persist along parts of the west coast on Wednesday, but elsewhere it should remain largely dry with sunshine. It'll be very warm again with afternoon temperatures between 22 and 25 degrees, but as usual it will be cooler near the coasts," Met Eireann said.

The forecaster said the weather will be warm on Thursday too and it looks like the high temperatures will spark off some heavy and thundery showers, leading to spot flooding in places.

There'll be fewer showers on Friday, overall it'll be a drier and sunnier day with temperatures still up to the mid twenties, Met Eireann said.

"Current indications are that it will remain warm during next weekend as well with a mix of sunshine and showers," it said.
