Overnight stays in Vienna, capital city of Austria, has hit a record of 6 million visitors during the first half of 2014, a 5.8 percent year-on-year boost in its tourist industry.

Vienna Tourism Board Director Norbert Kettner said at a press conference in the city on Monday that the largest increase had come from tourists from South Korea with a 26.6 percent increase.

Visitors from Germany, the United States and Italy have also shown significant increases, the Kurier newspaper reported.

Despite a drop in the number of visitors from Russia and Japan, Kettner said the 1.2 million overnight stays in June alone also saw an improvement in Russian visitor numbers, though for the entire first half of the year they were still down 12 percent compared to the same period in 2013.

Net turnover from the overnight stays thus increased 9 percent to 314 million U.S. dollars from January to May, with the June figures yet to be confirmed, Kettner calling it a "very good first half of the year."

All accommodation categories with the exception of 5-star hotels profited from the visitor boost, largely on the back of an expansion in capacity.

The average length of stay however fell to 2.3 days, following a wider European trend, something Kettner said would not be able to be lengthened in the short-term.

He said by the end of the year over 11 million dollars would be spent on initiatives to further expand the tourist market to 23 countries in order to keep Vienna as an attractive destination.
