The wreckage of an Air Algerie airliner with 116 people onboard has been found in Mali near its border with Burkina Faso, the French presidential office said on Friday.

The MD-83 plane was clearly identified although it had "disintegrated," the Elysee said in a statement.

"A French military unit has been sent to secure the site and gather evidence," the statement added.

The AH5017 flight, which carried 110 passengers and six Spanish crew, disappeared from the radar screen 50 minutes after it took off from Ouagadougou, capital of Burkina Faso, en route to Algiers. Among the passengers, 51 were French nationals.

Earlier in the day, Algerian Foreign Minister Ramtane Lamamra confirmed that the ill-fated passenger plane had crashed in neighboring Mali.

Algeria Thursday confirmed that the missing flight AH 5017 of Air Algeria with 116 people on board crashed in Mali, local media reported.

"We can confirm that the plane crashed in Malian territory and there are rescue teams that are close to the wreck," APS news agency cited Algerian Foreign Minister Ramtane Lamamra as saying. >> More

Families of Algerian passengers aboard missing plane rush to airport

Family members of six Algerian passengers on board an Air Algerie aircraft which went missing earlier Thursday rushed to Houari Boumediene Airport in Algiers to enquire information about the fate of their families.

According to the airlines, there were 119 passengers, including six Spanish crew members, on board the Algerian jet which disappeared in northern Mali.

Apart from the six Algerians, 51 from France, 24 from Burkina Faso, and nationals from Lebanon, Canada, Germany, Luxembourg, Mali, Belgium, Niger, Cameroon, Egypt, Ukraine, Romania and Switzerland, were also on board, according to the airlines, adding that no Chinese passengers were confirmed on the plane. >> More

About 50 French citizens aboard missing Algerie plane

About 50 French citizens are onboard a missing Air Algerie plane en route from Burkina Faso to Algiers, a representative of the airline told a news conference in Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso.

The plane vanished over the Malian region of Gao, some 500 km southern of the Algerian border, Algerie Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal told reporters on the sidelines of a parliament session. >> More

French, Algerian air forces search for missing Air Algerie plane

French Air Force units in Mali and Algerian Air Force have launched a joint operation to search for an Air Algerie passenger plane that disappeared early Thursday while flying over northern Mali, a security source told Xinhua.

The source, who spoke to Xinhua on the condition of anonymity, said air search operations were focused on the desert areas near the border between Mali and Niger, adding that the Algerian authorities have requested support from the governments of Mali and Niger. >> More

A passenger plane of Algeria's state-run Air Algerie has gone missing earlier Thursday 50 minutes after taking off from Ouagadougou Airport in Burkina Faso, the official APS news agency reported.

"Air navigation services of Air Algerie have lost contact on Thursday with AH 5017 flight coming from Ouagadougou to Algiers, at around 1:55 am GMT, or 50 minutes after take-off," APS said, quoting an Air Algerie statement. >> More
