A total of 18 people died and another 48 were injured in road accidents in Spain over the weekend, the country's General Direction of Traffic confirmed Monday.

The deaths occurred in 14 different accidents between 3 p.m. on Friday and midnight Sunday.

Two of those who died were motorcyclists, while a cyclist was also knocked down and killed by a driver tested positive for alcohol and a person riding a quad bike also died.

Saturday was the worst day for accidents with 11 deaths, while there were five on Sunday and two on Friday.

A chain of collisions involving 50 vehicles occurred on Saturday on the A8 road close to the town of Lugo in northwest Spain due to an excess of velocity in a fog bank, leaving 40 people injured and one killed.

Video images showed vehicles careered into the back of each other at high speed as drivers failed to slow down to deal with the low visibility.

The A8 still remained partially closed on Monday as investigations continued.

These accidents happened in the wake of a tragedy last Tuesday when eight members of a family lost their lives when the minibus they were travelling in was involved in a head-on collision with an articulated lorry close to the city of Alicante.

A total of 609 people have lost their lives on Spanish roads in the first seven months of the year.
