Moldova's President Nicolae Timofti late Monday signed a decree designating Valeriu Strelet as the country's prime minister, according to a press release of the Presidency reaching here from Moldova's capital city of Chisinau.

The head of state made the decision after consultations with the three parliamentary parties, the Liberal Democrats, the Democrats and the Liberals, which constituted a majority coalition in Parliament recently.

The candidacy of Valeriu Strelet was proposed by the Liberal Democratic Party, the largest ruling party in Moldova, and was supported by the other two components of the Alliance for European Integration.

Valeriu Strelet, 45, has been a member of the Parliament of Moldova since 2009. In 2011, he was elected the President of the Liberal-Democratic faction of the Parliament.

Under the Constitution, the prime minister-designate has at most 15 days to draw up a governing program and pick his ministers before seeking a confidence vote in parliament.

Earlier, the Liberal Democrats named last Thursday acting Education Minister Maia Sandu as candidate for the office of prime minister, soon after the three parties signed the agreement on the formation of the ruling alliance. Yet, the nomination was not approved by the coalition.

According to the coalition agreement, the prime minister would be from the Liberal Democrats, and the speaker from the Democrats, while the head of state will be elected by consensus following an initiative by the Liberals.

The former cabinet resigned on June 12, after Prime Minister Chiril Gaburici decided to step down, one day after he was questioned in a criminal case over alleged falsification of his high school diploma.
