The European Union (EU) has reaffirmed its support for Fiji in the wake of Tropical Cyclone Winston, the Fijian government said Thursday.

Detailed discussions will be held in the coming weeks on European assistance in Fiji's recovery and rebuilding phase, Fiji's department of information said.

The assurance was made by Pierre Amilhat, the European Commission's director for development coordination Asia, Central Asia, Middle East/Gulf and Pacific, at a meeting in Frankfurt, Germany with Fiji's Attorney-General and Minister for Finance Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, the department said in a statement.

"The two men discussed the Post Disaster Needs Assessment Report on Cyclone Winston, which has been jointly prepared by the European Union, the World Bank, the United Nations and the Asian Development Bank. The report is a comprehensive assessment of the damage caused by Cyclone Winston and the needs of Fijians living in the affected areas," the statement said.

Winston ravaged Fiji in February, claiming 44 lives and leaving a path of massive destruction.
