The Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) said Tuesday that Switzerland's unemployment level reached 3.5 percent in April, down from 3.6 percent in March 2016.

This drop mirrors a downward trend observed since January this year, when 3.8 percent of the confederation's working population were jobless.

With 5,784 fewer people out of work last month, SECO indicated that 149,540 individuals were classified as unemployed in the period under review.

This still represents a 6.0-percent increase compared to the same period last year.

Statistics show that youth (15 to 24 year olds) unemployment dropped 5.5 percent, with 17,871 young adults looking for a job last month.

The number of job seekers signed up to work in Switzerland also decreased by 7,261 people from March to April this year, reaching 210,926 individuals by the end of the month under review.

SECO said the number of listed job opportunities in the country grew by 55 last month to reach 10,441.
