Albania's population dropped 0.24 percent in 2015, continuing a ten-year-long downward trend, according to a report released on Monday.

Migration was the deciding factor behind the slide, which started as late as 2006, read the report, released by the Albanian Institute of Statistics.

With a total population of about 2.9 million, Albania has one of Europe's poorest economies, driving its people elsewhere to search for better jobs.

Population movement within the country also exists, as 54.4 percent of the urban population is made up of women, higher than the 49 percent of the national population, the report showed.

Looking at birth rates, the report said gender ratio at birth was 1.1 to one, meaning for every 100 baby girls there were 110 baby boys, higher than the natural rate of 106 boys to 100 girls.

For 2015, the life expectancy for Albanians is estimated to be 76.1 years for men and 79.7 years for women.
