The number of single-person households posted a significant increase in Austria, almost doubling in the space of 30 years, Statistics Austria said in its "Households and Family 2016" report on Thursday.

It noted that in 1986 statistics showed 779,000 people were living alone, while by 2016 this figure increased to 1,429,000.

The largest proportion of people living alone was recorded in the 65-and-over age bracket, with 499,000 persons or 32 percent of this bracket. At the younger spectrum, 20 percent of persons aged 25 to 34 were living in single households.

A further 4,223,000 Austrians, 49 percent of the population, were recorded as living in a household with a partner. Some 25 percent were recorded as partners living with children as part of a family unit, and 24 percent as partners without children.

The statistics further revealed that in the given 30-year period, the number of total private households in the country increased 37 percent, from 2,818,000 to 3,865,000.

The population living in these households only increased 15 percent over the same period, which meant population growth was only partly responsible for the increase in private households. Enditem
