The largest opposition party in Albania, the Democratic Party (DP), started Saturday morning an election process to elect the new leader of the Party in all its 73 branches in the country.

Operational Election Commission informed it had concluded the delivery and submission of election material in 73 commissions set up across the country to elect the leader of the Democrats in Albania, a DP statement said.

The Albanian Democrats will vote to choose between the current leader Lulzim Basha who has held this post since 2013 and Eduard Selami, a DP lawmaker, running for first time for such a post.

The voting process kicked off at 8 a.m. local time and closes at 7 p.m. while it hasn't registered any incidents, according to DP's announcement.

Democrats sought Basha's resignation after the landslide defeat in June 25 general elections which gave Premier Edi Rama a second mandate in office.

But, Basha refused to resign and instead of this, he announced that he had "frozen" all his functions and duties as a chairman of DP.

During the last month, both candidates held joint electoral meetings in several cities. While Basha seeks to "revive" the party after the huge loss, Selami has vowed to bring a new spirit of leadership in the party.

The new DP leader is expected to be announced early hours of Sunday, local media reported.
