Seven people were injured in an explosion at a semi-finished metals supplier in a suburb south of Stockholm, Swedish public television broadcaster SVT reported Tuesday.

The explosion occurred while a vacuum that collects metals dust was being serviced, Anders Bryngelsson with the Stockholm Police told SVT News.

The vacuum exploded, causing a huge amount of smoke to spread, he said. The person working with the vacuum was seriously burned and taken to the hospital by ambulance.

"Something went wrong when the person in question opened the filter and there was an explosion. The man has been taken to the hospital with serious burn injuries, mostly on his back," Roger Johansson, with the Sodertorn fire service, told SVT.

Emergency services were alarmed at 11.31 a.m.

Aston Carlsson, the company where the accident occurred, works with metals products for industry. The warehouse manager Jimmy Argarden told SVT the filter is cleaned only once or twice a year.

"Something went wrong when the filter was being cleaned. We don't know what ignited it. We have to investigate that," Argarden said, adding that smoke from metal and aluminium dust is extremely poisonous and that it will take many hours before the building can be entered again.

Two more people have been taken to hospital with smoke damage. Four people have inhaled the smoke but do not need treatment at hospital.

"Right now the smoke is being ventilated, but there is no risk of explosion," Bryngelsson said.
