Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said Tuesday that he had ordered the country's armed forces to continue abiding by the ceasefire with pro-independence rebels in eastern Ukraine that took effect on Aug. 25.
"We strongly believe the ceasefire must be universal to promote the peacemaking process," he tweeted.
Poroshenko said that he had talked over ways to maintain the truce with the Ukrainian army commanders during the visit to the frontline city of Kramatorsk in the eastern Donetsk region on Monday.
The conflict between government troops and insurgents in eastern Ukraine has been raging since April 2014, claiming about 10,000 lives.
On the midnight of Aug. 25, the confronting sides declared the ceasefire to ensure children's security ahead of the new school year, which will begin on Sept. 1.
According to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, during the first three days of the truce, the ceasefire was violated about 600 times.
The war between Ukrainian authorities and pro-independence rebels broke out in April 2014.
