Self-driving cars will be a feature of everyday life in Sweden within two years, researchers predict.

A new Swedish study claims that over 90 percent of cars could end up disappearing from the roads of Swedish cities in two years, Swedish Television reported Monday.

"Ten years ago, the industry may have said that self-driving cars would be introduced between 2040 and 2050, but now everyone believes self-driving cars will affect our everyday lives within two years from now," Anna Pernestal Brenden, a traffic researcher at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, told Swedish Television.

Recent years have seen rapid developments, with car manufacturers like Volvo, Ford and BMW, as well as IT companies likeGooglemaking major inroads in the development of self-driving cars. This means there will be fewer and fewer car owners.

The Royal Institute of Technology suggests that, in Stockholm, rather than owning your own car, it will be more common to download apps through which you can order a self-driving car, which will pick you up and take you where you need to go.

However, researchers also predict that a drop in car ownership and a reduction in the number of cars standing still at parking spots -- places that can then be used in other smarter ways -- will not necessarily lead to a reduction in congestion.

The cars that do stay on the roads will be used for more journeys, as more people will be likely to use cars as means of transport, according to researchers.

"You will be able to use cars without having to drive them and that simplicity would make us travel more by car. It also means that young people can move around more independently. Unless we start car pooling, this will lead to more vehicles on the roads," said Pernestal Brenden.

Nevertheless, there is still a lot of uncertainty regarding the safety of self-driving cars.

According to a fresh study, only 30 percent of Swedes said they would get into a self-driving car.
