The Spanish civil guards arrested Tuesday a woman accused of recruiting and indoctrinating jihadist fighters in order to send them to Iraq and Syria, the Spanish Interior Ministry said.

The arrest took place in Palamos town in the province of Girona, the same province the majority of the members of the terrorist cell behind the Aug. 17 terror attacks in Barcelona and Cambrils were from.

According to the ministry, the 21-year-old "formed part of an international network of people loyal to the Islamic State who participated in forums to recruit women to send them to conflict zones."

It added that the woman had undergone an "online process of self-radicalization, consuming propaganda from jihadist groups with extraordinarily violent content."

The arrest brings the number of suspected jihadists detained in Spain to 61 during 2017 and to 249 since the beginning of 2015.
