Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen on Tuesday said he would examine the objectives and personnel proposals for the future government "very carefully".

European values should be adhered to, and that all parties should have the common goal of leading Austria toward a positive future, Van der Bellen told the cabinet members under the leadership of Chancellor Christian Kern.

Kern offered his government's resignation to President Alexander Van der Bellen, in line with tradition after an election.

As a further part of the formality, the president subsequently tasked the government with continuing until a new government is formed.

Van der Bellen is expected to pass the duty of creating a new government to centre-right People's Party leader Sebastian Kurz on Friday, a day after the vote count has officially been completed, which showed Kurz's party received the highest number of votes.

Van der Bellen held talks with the 31-year-old leader on Tuesday, and he is expected to meet with Kern and leader of the right populist Freedom Party, Heinz-Christian Strache, on Wednesday, in line with his promise that he would speak to all parties.
