Latvian prime minister-designate Janis Bordans' attempts to form a new center-right coalition government failed on Wednesday as three political parties walked out of the talks, local media reported.

The liberal alliance For Development/For, the center-right New Unity and the right-wing National Alliance announced they were ceasing negotiations with Bordans' New Conservative Party and called on President Raimonds Vejonis to nominate another candidate for prime minister.

Representatives of the three parties explained that the talks on Latvia's new government failed amid disagreements about the government's work plan proposed by the New Conservative Party. The potential coalition partners found the plan unsustainable and excessively costly.

For Development/For noted already on Tuesday that the proposals included in the draft government declaration would cost the state budget between 1.7 and 2.4 billion euros, which Latvia cannot afford.

Daniels Pavluts, leader of For Development/For, also said on Facebook that allegations made by New Conservative Party during the talks had wrongfully hurt some newly elected parliamentarians' reputation.

President Vejonis is now expected to name the next candidate for prime minister after Latvia's Independence Day celebrations on Nov. 18 and consultations with political parties.

Bordans was designated by president on Nov. 7 as the country's new prime minister and was given two weeks to form a coalition government by Nov. 21.
