A storm system dubbed "Penelope" has swept Greece from the west to the east this week, bringing flooding in many parts of the country and snowfall in mountainous areas of the mainland.

On Thursday the northeastern island of Lesvos was counting its wounds from the heavy torrential rainstorm, while ferries remained moored at the ports of Lavrio and Rafina near Athens due to strong winds reaching up to 10 on the Beaufort scale, Greek national news agency AMNA reported.

On Lesvos local authorities were put on alert, as the heavy rainfall flooded homes and regional roads were cut off after landslides. A woman stranded in her car was rescued by firefighters, and a family was evacuated from a village, according to AMNA.

The storm system has hit Greece since Sunday evening, causing similar problems at a smaller scale in western parts of the country.

The national meteorological service EMY has issued an extraordinary weather warning for drivers to be vigilant.

According to meteorologists, the cold front will gradually recede by the weekend.
