Iranian marine holds five Iraqi fishing boats: report
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2004-09-26 16:07
The Iranian marine has held five Iraqi fishing boats and arrested nine Iraqi fishermen on board near Al Fao peninsula, south of Iraq, local newspaper reported Saturday.

"The arrest took place in the area of Rass Al Bisha, south of Iraq," Ali Hamad al Musawy, commander of the Iraqi coast guards, was quoted as saying.

Musawy, however, could not confirm whether the arrest occurred in the Iraqi territorial waters or that the fishermen crossed to the Iranian side.

The boats were taken to one of the Iranian harbors, said Musawy, adding that it is one of the rare fishing incidents with Iran since the toppling of Iraq's former regime.
