Egypt to supply Gaza power plant with gas
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2008-05-28 13:43
Egyptian Minister of Petroleum Amin Sameh Samir Fahmi said on Tuesday that Egypt would supply gas to the Palestinian Gaza power plant, the Egyptian MENA news agency reported.

Fahmi made the remarks at a meeting with visiting head of the Palestinian energy and natural resources department Omar Kattana, the report said.

The Egyptian minister added that Egypt will supply the Palestinian people with all their needs of petroproducts and adopt an all-out program to supply Gaza power station with Egyptian gas in a bid to ease the suffering of the Palestinian people.

Kattana expressed appreciation for Egypt's efforts to support the Palestinian people and the national authority.

Israel reduced fuel supplies to Gaza in September last year, three months after Hamas violently seized control of the territory. Israel says the measure was meant to put pressure on the Islamic movement to stop its attacks on Israel.

In addition to the reductions, the Israeli army used to close Nahal Oz fuel crossing every time Palestinians fired mortar shells on the crossing or nearby areas.

During the past three weeks, the fuel Israel sent to Gaza was even less than the reduced amounts that supposed to be received, the Gaza Petrol Stations Owners Union said.

Meanwhile, Hamas police forces on Saturday started a campaign to stop drivers from using cooking oil as petrol instead of diesel or gasoline.
