Israeli PM to visit U.S. in March
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-02-06 04:32

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will travel to the United States in early March to address the pro-Israel lobby AIPAC's annual convention, his office announced Sunday.

Netanyahu will give a speech in front of the American Israeli Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), and Israeli President Shimon Peres will also attend the event and be honored this year for his work, The Jerusalem Post reported.

The prime minister's spokesmen did not confirm to Xinhua whether Netanyahu will meet U.S. President Barak Obama.

However, the newspaper said rising tensions with Iran in the last months would make a meeting between the two leaders likely.

"There is reason to believe a meeting will be set up with President Obama," an official source within the Israeli Foreign Ministry told the newspaper.

Also on Sunday, Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman was slated to travel to the United States and was expected to meet with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and other officials.

Lieberman would tell his hosts that "there's a feeling in Israel that sanctions against Iran are well-received and we welcome their implementation," a foreign ministry official told Xinhua Sunday.
