PNA slams Iranian president's visit to disputed Gulf island
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-04-17 10:12

The Palestinian National Authority (PNA) on Monday slammed Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's visit to the disputed island of Abu Musa in the Gulf.

Tayeb Abdul Rahim, secretary-general of the Palestinian presidency, said the visit of Ahmadinejad to Abu Musa island "is provocative," according to a press statement published by the state-run Wafa news agency.

"Iran's role in the region is provocative and seeks to make trouble and create atmosphere that lead to intense situation in the Palestinian area, in the Gulf area in particular and in the Arab world area in general," said Abdel Rahim.

Iran and the UAE both claimed territorial sovereignty over three islands of the Greater and Lesser Tunbs and Abu Musa in the Gulf, and have been at odds over them for decades. Last Wednesday, Ahmadinejad visited Iran-controlled Abu Musa island, a move that immediately sparked criticism from Arab countries and the recall of UAE's ambassador to Iran.

The Palestinian official also accused Iran of intervening in the Palestinian affair and undermining all the attempts to achieve the Palestinian reconciliation.

"What Iran does in the Arab Gulf area only leads to damaging the Arab national jurisdiction on the Gulf states, mainly our brothers in UAE and also to creating contradictions between the Arabs and the Iranians," Abdul Rahim said. "As we reject the Israeli occupation of our lands, we reject all the stupid Iranian threats to the Gulf area."

The UAE is calling to find a solution to three disputed islands in the Gulf by direct negotiations. Otherwise, it would refer the issue to the International Court.
