The international airport of Syria 's second largest city Aleppo has been temporarily shutdown after a bid by the armed rebels to attack commercial flights, the local al-Khabar TV said reported Tuesday.

The move came on the backdrop of several attempts by armed rebels in the surrounding areas to target the commercial flights in Aleppo's airport, said the report.

The airport is expected to resume its flights within the next 48 hours after the army will totally secure the airport's surroundings.

However, the airport officials reportedly said that the shutdown is due to ongoing "maintenance work."

The armed rebels in Aleppo have recently threatened that they will target commercial flights of the airport, saying that they have fired at one plane's tires as a warning. They have been trying to take control over the airport of Aleppo and the main one in the capital Damascus.

The pro-government al-Watan daily reported Monday that the road to the international airport of Damascus is "100 percent" secure.

According to the paper, military operations are undergoing in Aleppo to secure the surroundings of the international airport there.

Syria has been witnessing unrest since 22 months ago, leaving thousands of people dead and injured.
