Rwanda targets to attract more investments in the information communication technology (ICT) sector as the country aims to become an ICT hub of Africa, an official said Tuesday.

"Disruptive innovation due to emerging technologies is transforming global economic potential. Rwanda is looking for more investments to boost the ICT sector in order to drive innovation and entrepreneurship in the country," said Regis Gatarayiha, permanent secretary in the ministry of ICT, at a national ICT hub strategy consultation forum in the Rwandan capital Kigali.

ICT links consumers to businesses and also enables innovators to share ideas and seek funding and advice through the shared economy, said Gatarayiha.

"As the world continues to evolve, so too does the way we view the importance of technology. There's huge potential in the ICT sector that is still untapped," he said, noting opportunities for investors to build on the ICT infrastructure laid across the country.

According to him, Rwanda targets to become an ICT hub of Africa, but this will be achieved through heavy investments in ICT industry.

According to the 2015 Global Information Technology Report (GITR) by the World Economic Forum, the small central African country has made considerable improvements to exploit the potential of ICTs to drive social and economic transformation and catch up with more advanced nations.

It plans to establish an ICT park in the Kigali Special Economic Zone in the suburbs of Kigali, which will be a base of technological investments, including training, industries, research and development.

In 2014, Rwanda rolled out 4th Generation Long-Term Evolution (4GLTE) internet network offering the fastest wireless broadband on high-speed data for mobile phones and devices such as modems and routers.
