South Sudanese President Salva Kiir and rebel leader Riek Machar are set to arrive in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa on Wednesday to revive peace talks, the Ethiopia Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) said on Tuesday.

MoFA said in a press statement the meeting between the South Sudan warring sides is being organized under the invitation of Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed who is also currently chairman of the East African bloc, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD).

Ethiopia, a key player in IGAD, has hosted several rounds of South Sudan peace talks ever since civil war broke out in South Sudan more than four years ago.

Ethiopia was also host to a peace agreement signed in August 2015, between South Sudan President Salva Kiir and his exiled ex-deputy Riek Machar.

Renewed fighting in July 2016, however, led to the weakening of the agreement with South Sudan government and rebels, accusing each other of restarting the hostilities.

South Sudan descended into violence in December 2013, after a political dispute between Kiir and Machar led to split in the army, leaving soldiers to fight alongside ethnic lines.

The civil war is estimated to have killed tens of thousands and displaced around 4 million people.
