At least ten people were hurt in clashes between protesters and police near the Ukrainian parliament here on Tuesday, authorities said.

Andriy Kryshchenko, the head of Kiev Police, told reporters that eight policemen and two protesters appealed for medical help with minor injuries, while two demonstrators were detained.

According to local media reports, the skirmishes occurred after a group of protesters tried to enter the parliament building, but police prevented them from doing it. The protesters reportedly hurled bottles at the policemen.

About 2,000 coal miners, Chernobyl accident liquidators and Afghan war veterans held the demonstration in central Kiev to demand the parliament not to cut their benefits.

It was unclear which group of protesters clashed with the police.
