Southern Greece experienced an earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale Monday, the Institute of Geodynamics affiliated with the National Observatory of Athens reported.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or property loss, the local authorities said.

The epicenter was some 37 km off the coast of Pylos at a depth of 10 km, according to scientists.

"People are calm. Life continues. We are used to earthquakes in our area," Pylos Mayor Dimitris Kafantaris told Greek national news agency AMNA.

Tremors of such magnitude are said to be common in the region.
