Twitter said Thursday that it did not "shadow ban" the tweets or lower the visibility of any prominent Republicans on the platform.

"People are asking us if we shadow ban. We don't. Read more to get all the facts," Twitter@Twitter tweeted Thursday evening.

Twitter's denial came after it was reported that Twitter might have intentionally made it difficult to find some politically motivated groups, individuals or parties in the search results of Twitter.

A VICE News report said Wednesday that Twitter's drop-down search section was not showing the profiles of some prominent Republicans, including Ronna McDaniel, chair of the Republican National Committee, Republican Representatives Mark Meadows, Jim Jordan and Matt Gaetz, as well as Donald Trump Jr.'s spokesman Andrew Surabian.

U.S. President Donald Trump also responded by saying on Twitter that his administration will probe the "discriminatory" practice by the world's leading social media platform.

"Twitter 'SHADOW BANNING' prominent Republicans. Not good. We will look into this discriminatory and illegal practice at once! Many complaints," Trump said in a Twitter post.

Twitter said in an official blog post that the company did rank tweets and search results, but it did not "shadow ban."

"You are always able to see the tweets from accounts you follow (although you may have to do more work to find them, like go directly to their profile)," it said.

Twitter gave a definition to what is called "shadow banning" -- "deliberately making someone's content undiscoverable to everyone except the person who posted it, unbeknownst to the original poster."

"We certainly don't shadow ban based on political viewpoints or ideology," Twitter noted.

Twitter said what happened to its search results earlier this week was because the company had identified an issue where some accounts weren't auto-suggested in search even when people were searching for their specific name.

The bug, which affects only Twitter's search auto-suggestions, was fixed as of Wednesday, Twitter said.

Not only some Republican politicians but also Democratic members "were not properly showing up within search auto-suggestions as result of this issue," Twitter explained, saying "most accounts affected had nothing to do with politics at all."
