More than a third of children in London are unaware that fruit grows in the United Kingdom, a major London-based evening news quoted research as saying on Tuesday.

A survey showed one in five 6-12 years olds have never picked their own fruit and 60 percent don't know that blackcurrants grow on bushes, according to the Evening Standard newspaper.

Of the 1,000 children questioned by drinks brand Honest Kids, more than 50 percent did not know what an orchard is and 90 percent did not know how bananas, their favorite fruit, were grown.

So much so, 95 percent didn't know even where strawberries come from. Across the country, a fifth of British children didn't know that apples grow on trees, the study said.

The study found four in 10 baffled little Brits think cherries originate from bushes, vines or plants, while 14 percent think melons grow under the ground.

More than nine in 10 kids have no idea how strawberries and cranberries are grown.

Just under half of those polled were confused about where plums came from, 53 percent did not know how apricots are grown and 88 percent are baffled about the origin of pineapples.

To encourage families to pick their own, presenter Katie Piper spent the day with children who had never been to a farm so that they could learn how fruit grows, the newspaper added.
