Uganda government employees on Friday converged at different locations across the country in a nationwide drive aimed at planting more than 10 million trees.

The drive was spearheaded by the National Forestry Authority (NFA) to restore the country's fast declining forest cover.

NFA figures show that Uganda has lost three million hectares of forest cover in the last 25 years.

Tom Okello, the executive director of NFA, told reporters earlier that the drive aims at restoring about 136,000 hectares of forest cover annually, and that by 2040, the deforestation trend would have been reversed.

Okello said deforestation is one of the "most critical environmental crises" facing Uganda.

While officiating at the launch of the tree-planting exercise at Mabira Forest in central Uganda, Jennifer Namuyangu, the minister of state for local government, said conservation issues must be taken seriously.

Namuyangu challenged Ugandans to commemorate every marriage, death, birth, and graduation by planting trees.

"Imagine every marriage, death, graduation and more are celebrated by a tree being planted. Surely we would have many trees planted," she said.
