Fresh ethnic clashes along the borders of Ethiopia's largest Oromia region and Benishangul Gumuz region have left at least five people dead and scores of others injured, state television EBC reported on Saturday.

The clashes, which started after armed insurgents on Wednesday killed scores of Benishangul Gumuz regional state officials, have forced many to flee, EBC said.

According to Oromia Regional State's Communication Bureau, federal and local security forces are being deployed to prevent the violence from escalating.

The latest clashes followed waves of attacks on civilians that killed 28 people on the outskirts of the capital, Addis Ababa.

The attacks last week drove more than 15,000 people to flee and seek refuge in schools and other public facilities across Addis Ababa.

As the situation improves, the majority of the displaced have returned to their respective localities, following massive government-led efforts to make peace among the conflicting groups.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on Wednesday urged Ethiopians from all walks of life to maintain the long-standing peace and togetherness, so as to avoid misunderstanding that lead to conflicts.

"We have to come together with a common notion that denotes united we stand, divided we fall," he stressed.
