More than 450 people have been arrested by police for violent attacks on migrant workers in Gujarat that prompted a mass exodus of laborers, authorities said Monday.
"We have arrested 450 people for the attacks on migrant workers from the eastern state of Bihar and the northern state of Uttar Pradesh. A probe report has also been submitted to the central government," Gujarat Home Minister Pradeepsinh Jadeja told the media.
The attacks on migrant workers have been taking place in some five districts of the state -- Gandhinagar, Ahmedabad, Patan, Sabarkantha and Mehsana -- in the wake of a rape of a minor girl allegedly by a laborer, leading to a mass exodus of migrant workers from Gujarat.
The state government has also urged migrant workers to return, assuring them of security.
"It is our responsibility to provide security to those who come to Gujarat for employment from other states. We are very serious about resuming the law and order in the state," the state home minister said.
The wealthy state of Gujarat is a popular employment destination for migrant workers from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.
