The government of Botswana has announced that it will accede to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD).

Nonofo Molefhi, the minister of presidential affairs governance and public administration, made the announcement on Monday while officially opening a three-day National Disability Framework consultative conference organized by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in partnership with the University Of Botswana in Gaborone.

Molefhi said the conference came at an appropriate time when there is ongoing dialogue within the government regarding Botswana's accession to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD), and the development of a National Disability Strategy and Disability Legislation.

The session will bring together academics, government, the private sector and civil society in order to reflect on disability challenges.

Best practices within all the stake holders will be shared in order to address negative attitudes imposed upon persons with disabilities which deny them the fulfilment of their human rights.

It will also seek to assess the impact of current practices and policies and to highlight the achievements and identify gaps.

It will attempt to make recommendations to policy makers, the legal fraternity and other stakeholders to develop well informed strategies aimed at empowering people with disabilities.
