African Union (AU) on Sunday called for collective commitment and concrete actions so as to strengthen science, technology and innovation for the development of Africa.

(AU Commissioner for Human Resources, Science and Technology Sarah Anyang Agbor made the call during the First Extra-Ordinary Summit of the Committee of Ten Heads of State and Government (C10) Championing Education, Science and Technology in Africa.

The event is underway with the theme "Strengthening Education, Science, Technology and Innovation for Africa's Development," the AU said in a statement on Sunday.

Calling AU member countries to reiterate their efforts towards actions that will strengthen education, science and technology outcomes in Africa, Agbor further underlined the focus on results, implementation and measurable targets.

The commissioner also indicated the urgent need to explore opportunities that are available in the continent in a bid to enhance investments through increased mobilization of resources.

"It is important that we commit sufficient resources and adopt multi-sectoral approaches which are essential to realizing the aspirations of Agenda 2063 (AU's 50-year flagship plan) and attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals," she said.

Agbor also stressed the importance of the policy interventions and strategies that were developed by the pan African bloc AU so as to strengthen outcomes in education, science and technology, and innovation throughout the continent.

AU's policy interventions in education, science and technology, and innovation include the Continental Strategy for Technical, Vocational, Education and training that aimed to foster youth employment.

Major outcomes of the summit are expected to be presented during the next AU Summit of Heads of State and Government, the AU said.
