Polish Minister of Health Lukasz Szumowski on Sunday made an appeal to parents to vaccinate their children, due to the recently reported measles cases.

A total of 17 people suffering from this illness have been registered in the Masovia region so far.

During a press conference held in Warsaw, Szumowski said the situation was worrying, as 17 measles cases have already been confirmed.

"Fortunately, this situation is safe from the population's point of view, thanks to the fact that the majority of Poles, over 95 percent of people, are vaccinated against measles," he said. Szumowski said currently there was no threat of an epidemic.

The recent cases of the disease are mostly the result of the lack of vaccination, and include a child under 13 months old, below the required vaccination age.

Szumowski also said the link between vaccinations and diseases such as autism, which is a fear of many people deciding not to vaccinate children, has not been confirmed medically.
