Egypt brokered on Tuesday evening a cease-fire agreement between Israel and Islamic Hamas movement-led militant groups in the Gaza Strip, well-informed Palestinian sources told Xinhua.

The sources in Hamas, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told Xinhua that the Egyptian security intelligence succeeded in brokering a cease-fire between Israel and the Palestinian resistance in the Gaza Strip.

Meanwhile, the Qatari al-Jazeera reported on Tuesday evening that according to sources in Hamas, a cease-fire agreement was reached between Israel and the Palestinian militant groups in the Gaza Strip.

The Islamic Jihad in Gaza said that the movement will be committed to calm in condition that "the enemy (Israel) must be also committed to it and stop all kinds of hostilities."

Earlier on Tuesday evening, Ismail Haniyeh, Hamas chief, said in a statement that "if the occupation (Israel) stops its aggression, it is possible to get back to ceasefire."

"The Palestinian armed resistance defended itself and its people, and our people embraced resistance with patience and pride," said Haniyeh's statement.

The Egyptian-brokered cease-fire ended two days of bloody confrontations between Israel and Hamas-led militant groups in the Gaza Strip that killed at least eight people and wounded over 20 civilians.

Tension between the two sides mounted on Monday evening, when Gaza militant groups, who formed a joint operations room, including Hamas, fired barrages of rockets from the coastal enclave into southern Israel.

The militant groups fired the rockets in revenge for the killing of seven Hamas militants on Sunday night east of the southern Gaza Strip town of Khan Younis, where one Israeli army officer was also killed in the exchange of fire in the area.

In response to firing barrages of rockets, Israeli war jets carried out intensive airstrikes on the Gaza Strip, which destroyed buildings, homes of Hamas leaders and a television station.
