The "Brexodus" wave of European Union (EU) workers quitting jobs in Britain has accelerated to record levels since records began in the country, British official figures revealed on Tuesday.

The number of jobs held by non-UK nationals from the EU plummeted by 132,000 to 2.25 million over the year to September, according to the British Office for National Statistics (ONS).

The drop was most marked among nationals from eight Eastern European countries that joined the EU in 2004, including Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary.

It was the deepest fall since detailed data was collected in 1997 and it was the third quarterly decline on the trot.

The almost six per cent overall fall has been driven by a major reduction of 15 per cent in the number of workers from Eastern European countries.

In its latest update on the state of the labor market, the ONS revealed that in the countdown to Brexit the number of workers in the UK from the Eastern European countries fell by 154,000 to 881,000 in the past year.

Critics have labeled the reduction in the number of EU nationals working in the UK on Brexit uncertainty, arguing Europeans are ditching Britain because they are unsure exactly what their future will be after Britain leaves the EU next March.
