French President Emmanuel Macron's office on Tuesday papered over U.S. President Donald Trump's series of tweets criticizing France's trade and security policies, saying the two leaders mainatained their bilateral ties.

"The relationship between Emmanuel Macron and Donald Trump is not always easy, but it is continuous," a source from the Elysee was quoted as saying by BFMTV news channel.

"The link exists between the President of the Republic and Donald Trump. Beyond tweets, what matters to us is that they talk to each other several times a week about problems that agitate the world," added the source.

Earlier on Tuesday, Trump wrote a series of messages on Twitter, saying: "The problem is that Emmanuel suffers from a very low Approval Rating in France, 26 percent, and an unemployment rate of almost 10 percent. He was just trying to get onto another subject. By the way, there is no country more Nationalist than France, very proud people-and rightfully so!... "

To the French President's office, these "tweets are made for Americans."

"We do not have to comment on these words," it added.

Macron has made clear his differences with Trump notably on climate change, nuclear deal and nationalism approach. But, at the same time, he developed a strong relationship with Trump at a time when many European leaders are keeping a distance.

At the weekend, he received his American counterpart in Paris as part of the ceremonies marking the 100th anniversary of the end of World War One, amid strains over his remarks over the need to create European defense army that Trump described as "very insulting " in a tweet he wrote before landing in Paris on Friday morning.

Underscored his strong relationship with Trump, the French head of state tried to tread water on the spat and echoed Washington's call for greater share of the defense costs within NATO.

However, he attacked Trump to whom he always referred as "my friend" in hitting remarks about protectionism and nationalism while he commemorated millions of soldiers killed in WWI.

"Patriotism is the exact opposite of nationalism. Nationalism is a betrayal of patriotism. When we say 'our interests come first, those of others don't matter,' we erase the very thing that a nation holds most precious, that which gives it life and makes it great: its moral values," Macron told scores of heads of state and governments in Paris on Sunday.
